Picasso dream painting in nightmare scenario
Vegas casino magnate accidentally pokes hole in artist's ‘Le Reve’ work
Picasso’s famed “Dream” painting turned into a nightmare for Las Vegas casino magnate Steve Wynn when he accidentally gave the multimillion dollar canvas an elbow.

Wynn had just finalized a $139 million sale to another collector of his painting, called “Le Reve” (The Dream), when he poked a hole in the artwork while showing it to friends at his Las Vegas office a couple of weeks ago.
Director and screenwriter Nora Ephron, who witnessed and related the incident in her blog on the Huffington Post Web site said Wynn had raised his hand to show the group something about Picasso’s 1932 portrait of his mistress Marie-Therese Walter.
“At that moment, his elbow crashed backward right through the canvas. There was a terrible noise,” Ephron wrote, noting that Wynn has retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease that damages peripheral vision.
“Smack in the middle ... was a black hole the size of a silver dollar. ’Oh s---,’ he said. ’Look what I’ve done. Thank goodness it was me.’”
Wynn’s office on Tuesday confirmed the story, an account of which also appeared in this week’s The New Yorker. Both accounts said Wynn had decided to release the buyer from the sale agreement and to repair and keep the painting himself.
I guess people with money are stupid too. He paid about 49 million and was selling for 139 million - just a 90 million goof!! Why would anyone pay over 10 dollars for that anyway? Is it just me, or does that picture look obscene?
Samaritans unwittingly assist in car theft
Do-gooders offered impromptu driving lesson to sly 14-year-old
MESA, Ariz. - People got behind and pushed and even offered an impromptu driving lesson to help a boy who was struggling to drive a car — all without realizing that the 14-year-old was stealing the vehicle, police said.
The boy stopped mid-getaway Wednesday to ask for help, and at least 15 people responded, according to Phoenix police. Police said the boy then got stuck in reverse, and more neighbors helped him push the car.
When he still couldn't figure out how to operate the manual transmission, police said he asked a passer-by for an impromptu driving lesson. Margarita Wood tried to give him directions through the car window and finally climbed in to help.
Police said none of the would-be Samaritans realized the vehicle was stolen or that the driver was underage.
"It is incredible that an entire neighborhood would participate in this comedy of errors," said Sgt. Dave Norton.
"Nobody asked why a 14-year-old is out with a vehicle and doesn't know how to drive it," said Norton. "His looks and size should've made bells and whistles go off in people's minds."
Most of the time people won't say hello or give you the time of day. Over 15 people tried to help a 14-year-old drive a car, no questions asked. Wow!!
Thief Accidentally Turns Himself In
MILAN - An Italian thief accidentally turned himself in after losing his cellular phone while robbing an elderly lady, calling his own number to meet the finder -- and unwittingly arranging a date with police.
The 77-year-old victim handed over the phone that the bag snatcher had dropped to police, who lured the thief to a meeting where he was arrested, news agency Agi reported Monday.
Hello, Hello, can you hear me now? Can you hear me now?
Alleged Arsonist Leaves Birth Certificate
WAUKESHA, Wis. - Police said a suspected arsonist was arrested after they found his birth certificate at the scene of a fire this week.
The 19-year-old man from Waukesha was arrested Wednesday after officials found his birth certificate at the scene of Sunday's fire, Waukesha Fire Marshal Brian Charlesworth said.
"You would think somebody wouldn't do that," Charlesworth said. "But, fortunately for us, they did."
The man was also being held in connection with a fire on May 29 that damaged a historic home in town.
Police and firefighters noted similar characteristics between the two fires. The most recent fire was a series of small ones at a telecommunications business, said Lt. William Graham. The man's birth certificate was found at the back of the building, he said.
Immigration officials have been contacted because the man told police he was in the country illegally, he said.
And his birth certificate was from where?
This casino has everything — except gambling
Tribe mistakenly builds on Michigan site where betting is illegal
ST. IGNACE, Mich. - Gambling is the only thing missing from a new Indian casino in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, mistakenly built in an area where gambling is illegal.
The $36 million Kewadin Shores Casino and Hotel opened in June and has restaurants, a lounge and an indoor pool, overlooking Lake Huron's Horseshoe Bay north of the Mackinac Bridge.
But its 29,000-square-foot casino with 800 slot machines and 26 gambling tables has been unable to operate because the U.S. government says part of the casino was built on land where Indian gambling is not allowed.
Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians are debating who was responsible for the mistake, with the tribe's current and former chairmen blaming each other, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.
The tribe now is quickly building a $2.5 million replacement casino at the site in Mackinac County's Forest Township, north of St. Ignace.
"It wasn't until after we had the pilings and foundation in place that we realized that something wasn't right," current Chairman Aaron Payment said. "We did another survey and found that all but 30 feet of the casino was on ineligible land."

Defendant asks for, gets higher bail
Arkansas man accused of ripping off mom tells judge bond is set too low
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - How often does a judge hear a defendant say he doesn't think his bond is high enough?
It happened last week in an Arkansas courtroom, where a man accused of stealing from his mother told a judge that he wanted his $30,000 bond increased.
Cedric Criswell told the judge, "I stole from my mother. I don't think that bond's high enough."
Criswell is accused of stealing his mother's car and checkbook.
The judge ended up setting bond at $50,000, and Criswell remains jailed in Pope County.
Want to bet his Mom will post the higher bond and spring him?
