Oh Yeah, I'm Sorry

I'm sure everyone is tired of the Michael Vick dog fighting news by now, but I see one glaring omission from his press release today.

Vick’s brief apology Monday was very well coached with a huge hole in it.

Vick stood at a podium and said what the attorneys wanted the judge to hear:
“forgiveness and understanding,” “bad judgment,” “very immature,” “role model” and “Jesus,” closing with “I will redeem myself.”

First, Michael Vick apologized to all the people he lied to. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank. Coach Bobby Petrino. His teammates.

“I was not honest and forthright in our discussions,” the star quarterback said Monday, somber and deliberate and not speaking from notes.

Then he apologized to “all the young kids out there for my immature acts.”

“I need to grow up,” he added.

And so began a public act of contrition from Vick, who pleaded guilty and then stood behind a podium to say his job now was “bettering Michael Vick the person, not the football player.”

And how did he address his killing of dogs and of dog fighting? With this statement: “Dog fighting is a terrible thing, and I did reject it.”

Wow, funny he had that revelation right after he saw all the evidence against him and copped a plea.

I did reject it? Sounds like he is saying my friends made me do it but I did reject it. Looks like to me that until caught he didn't seem to reject it.

Acceptance of responsibility is one of the factors U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson will consider in handing down Vick’s sentence Dec. 10. I hope the judge sees through his acceptance the attorneys coached him to say.

What about his team the Atlanta Falcons? Will they fire him as any business would when an employee is convicted of a felony?

Well, this as we all know is a sports figure. The Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank talked a good game earlier in the process but now it's all about the money.

In Atlanta, the Falcons said they would not cut Vick immediately because of salary-cap issues. The team intends to pursue the $22 million in bonus money that he already received in a $130 million contract signed in 2004.

“We cannot tell you today that Michael is cut from the team,” Blank said. “Cutting him today may feel better emotionally for us and many of our fans. But it’s not in the long-term best interests of our franchise.”

I'm glad to hear money is more important than cutting him today so that the majority of the people including fans would feel better emotionally. We wouldn't want to do that, no sir!!

It’s not in the long-term best interests of their franchise because look at the television coverage and $$$ they will attract when Michael Vick makes his triumphant return to the football field.

I love this next story.

Chewed Vick cards a hit at eBay auction

Through Monday morning, trading cards draw bid of $6,400 for charity

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Artist and dog lover Rochelle Steffen hoped to raise $100 when she put chewed-up Michael Vick trading cards on eBay.

Instead, the Cape Girardeau woman’s auction has gained international attention.

Through Monday morning, the bid stood at $6,400. Bidding closes Wednesday morning.
“I am absolutely in love with this worldwide response,” Steffen told the Southeast Missourian.

The 22 cards were chewed on by Steffen’s two dogs.

At first, the ad said proceeds will be donated to the humane society of the bidder’s choice. But after eBay yanked the sale because it broke the site’s rule on charity auction, Steffen reposted it saying she’d do “very good” things with the money.

Steffen says she has heard from numerous people who say her auction inspired them to donate money to animal shelters.

At least some good might come out of something so bad!!

Well friends and foes, that is all I got for today.

Pet or adopt a dog today, they are both rewarding!!!

I loved the trading card story. Good going.
I wish Vick had seemed more remorseful about the dogs. I would like to see him actually apologize for his part in hurting and killing the dogs. Just so I could maybe get the feeling that he knows those were living, breathing creatures who had brains and feelings. I would also like to see him donate a large amount of money to the SPCA or Humane Society or some other animal shelter.
