Bad news for "Bad Newz Kennels," good news for dogs

Michael Vick, July 26: "Today in court I pleaded innocent to the allegations made against me. I take these charges very seriously and I look forward to clearing my good name. I respectfully ask all of you to hold your judgment until all of the facts are shown."

Just the facts:

Michael Vick, via a statement from his attorney, Aug. 20: "Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter."

Vick Still Might Face State Charges

RICHMOND, Va. - Michael Vick's legal troubles from dogfighting could get even worse. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback faces possible prosecution in state court, where punishment might far exceed the maximum five years in prison that could await him in his federal case.

Local prosecutor Gerald Poindexter has said he likely will pursue charges against Vick, who has plummeted from favorite son to a symbol of animal abuse in the four months since authorities raided his Surry County property. Poindexter says the case could go before a county grand jury Sept. 25.

My opinion is they got him, but he doesn't get it.

In another statement his situation was said to be caused by his old friends that he stuck with once he became rich and famous and they drug him down.

No matter who your friends are, if they suggest something illegal and you break the law, it is you and you alone that caused that!!

Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter.

I wonder just who that is?

No remorse for what he did to the dogs, just sorry to everyone who has been hurt by this matter.

Again I ask, I wonder just who that is?

The news media: What I find interesting is all the rhetoric about whether Vick will play football again. This is on every TV news, sports and radio as well.

If Vick had been a doctor, would the same questions be asked about whether he would ever perform surgery again? I think not!

Why are we so enthralled with sports figures that everyone is concerned with whether he will play again?

Will he play again or not is not the issue and can't be answered anyway!!

To me the news should be using Vick as a catalyst to bring more attention to the issue of dog fighting.

Do you believe for one second Vick is the only person to sponsor this type activity?

Consider this alarming fact, until Vick, how many of you even knew or heard about dog fighting? I am as guilty as anyone for not paying attention.

The real story is how much of this goes on and how can we stop it, not will Vick play again!!

I think all of us pet lovers should familiarize ourselves with our state laws as it relates to these types of activities and push for strong laws against these activities as well as strong punishments for those who break those laws.

Maybe the good news from the Bad Newz Kennels is that it has awakened us all to these cruel underground activities!!

I think you're right. He still doesn't get it. I guess that people like him who can be so cruel to animals must not have the capacity to love animals or think of them as members of the family. It seems that to people like Vick dogs are just "things". It's just sad that there are people who get pleasure from seeing animals being hurt and in pain. Sick individuals. Yes, we all have to do our part and keep on top of this situation, use our voices to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
