Friday Potpourri

Finally, science is looking out for me.

Scientists Create 'Exercise in a Pill'

NEW YORK - Here's a couch potato's dream: What if a drug could help you gain some of the benefits of exercise without working up a sweat? Scientists reported Thursday that there is such a drug - if you happen to be a mouse.

Just call me Mickey and give me the pills to test.

I can just see all the people coming up to me and saying, "Man you must really work out a lot - your keg has turned into a six pack."

In case you missed the next story...

Sea Lion Slips Aboard Boat, Won't Leave

FERNDALE, Wash.- No one wants to be stuck with a large, uninvited visitor. Especially a sea lion on a family sailboat. Even more so twice in a day.

Lynnea Flarry was picnicking with her family Sunday afternoon on Clark Island when her daughter-in-law saw what they thought was a seal aboard the family's 31-foot Catalina, apparently after taking advantage of a ladder extending into the water from the stern.

Photographs taken by the family show the animal was probably a 2- or 3-year-old female California sea lion, said Sarah Rages, seasonal rehabilitator at Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Friday Harbor. Females of the species often weigh 200 pounds or more when they mature at 5 to 6 years.

Flarry said her son and grandchildren took a dingy back to the boat.
"When they got close (she) hid (her) head behind the lifesaver like a little kid who hides behind a curtain and doesn't realize his toes are sticking out," Flarry said.

Now that is funny! I wonder how they know she is from California? Evidently she decided against a staycation this year and went traveling.

I'm sure all my readers have seen this next story by now.

They already made the movie and it's sequel.

Parents Forget 3-Year-Old at Airport

JERUSALEM - Israeli airport police say a couple going on a European vacation remembered to bring their duty-free shopping and their 18 suitcases, but forgot their 3-year-old daughter at the airport.

The couple and their five children were late for a flight to Paris Sunday and made a mad dash to the gate. In the confusion, their daughter got lost. A policeman found her wandering around the terminal, crying for her mother.

Well like I said leaving a kid at the airport has already been done. My question to all my readers is did you see the real story and wonder how that could happen?

The real story was they had 18 suitcases. That's right, 18 suitcases, now that's a story. The airlines only let us take one suitcase and these fools got to take 18.

Well as my Jewish friends would say, Ahf Mir Gezogt: pronounced, ahf Meer geh-ZOKHT

Translation---“As fate would have it.”

Today being Friday makes me think back to those Fridays and Saturdays as a kid when the parents would take us to the city shopping.

Take a short waltz down memory lane with me.

The F.W. Woolworth Co. was among the first five-and-dime stores, which sold discounted general merchandise at fixed prices, usually five or ten cents.

Woolworth's, as the stores popularly became known, was one of the first American retailers to put merchandise out for the shopping public to handle and select without the assistance of a sales clerk.

But they also had something of better value - lunch counters which served as general gathering places.

A ham sandwich for 40 cents, add a king size coke for 10 cents. Then for dessert, apple pie for 15 cents and a milk shake for 25 cents. Add tax and and a 10% tip and you still got out for a buck and a dime.

Oh those were the days my friends!! Enjoy your weekend.
